Gi, No-Gi, or Both? The Advantages of Each in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Walk into any jiu jitsu academy and you'll hear the question: should I train in the gi or without it? At Iron Wolf Academy, we teach both. Each style has its own strengths, and they work best together.
The advantages of training in the gi
The gi is the traditional uniform: a heavy jacket, pants, and a belt. All that fabric gives you grips and handles you can use on your partner, and they can use the same on you. Gi training helps you:
Slow down and learn technique, since the extra grips and friction make it harder to explode out of positions
Build patience and problem-solving, because escaping a strong grip forces you to think, not just muscle out
Develop a huge toolbox of chokes, sweeps, and controls that use the collar and sleeves
Build serious grip strength and full-body endurance
Practice for real life, where people wear jackets, hoodies, and jeans you can grab or be grabbed by
Many coaches say the gi makes you more technical, and that technique carries over to everything else you do.
The advantages of training No-Gi
No-Gi is trained in rash guards and shorts. With no fabric to hold, the pace speeds up, and you rely on body positioning, underhooks, and head control. No-Gi training helps you:
Get faster and more athletic, with quicker scrambles and transitions
Sharpen your leg locks, wrestling, and takedowns
Learn tight control without relying on grips
Get ready for summer clothes, the beach, or sports where there's little to hold on to
Connect more easily with wrestling and MMA styles
No-Gi teaches you to move, react, and adapt in real time.
Why training both is the best choice
Each style fills in the other's gaps. The gi builds precision, patience, and grip fighting. No-Gi builds speed, pressure, and adaptability. Students who train both tend to:
Understand jiu jitsu more deeply, because they see why a technique works, not just that it does
Become more well-rounded competitors who can enter gi or No-Gi tournaments
Stay prepared for self-defense in any season and any clothing
Keep training fun and fresh, with variety that keeps them coming back
